Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas National President Jessica Dy met with former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos to discuss support for the proposed extension of the term of barangay officials.

Under current law, barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials are mandated to serve a three-year term. However, with barangay elections set for December 2025, incumbent officials will see their term shortened to just two years—raising concerns about instability in grassroots governance.

The Liga stressed that such a shortened term limits the ability of barangay leaders to implement meaningful programs, pursue long-term development plans, and deliver essential services effectively. By contrast, an extension would ensure continuity, efficiency, and stronger service delivery at the community level.

Former Secretary Abalos, a long-time champion of local governance, expressed his full support for the Liga’s advocacy. Drawing from his experience as both a former local executive and Cabinet official, he underscored the importance of stability in barangay leadership.

The Liga extended its heartfelt gratitude to Atty. Benhur Abalos for his steadfast commitment to barangay officials and the Filipino people, affirming that his support provides a vital boost to the ongoing campaign for term extension.
