"Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas Pushes for Zero Illiteracy Through Grassroots Partnership with Gawad Kalinga"

The Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, led by National President Jessica Dy, is taking bold steps to explore how barangays can play a stronger role in eradicating illiteracy across the country.
In a recent meeting with Gawad Kalinga (GK) representatives Daniel Bercasio, Executive Director; Clipse Iriberri, Head of Operations; and Mark Cruz, Head of New Initiatives, the Liga emphasized the importance of empowering barangays as frontliners in education and social change. GK, an organization with three decades of experience in community development, continues to champion grassroots engagement as a key driver of transformation.
With the Philippines projected to remain a young nation by 2050, the Liga and Gawad Kalinga are aligned in investing in the youth today as a crucial foundation for the country’s future.
One of the initiatives being explored is the Zero Illiteracy Program, which aims to deploy Barangay Literacy Workers nationwide. The vision: every child in every barangay should be able to read, unlocking doors to education, opportunity, and progress. A pilot study is set to begin this October, paving the way for a possible national rollout.
More than just teaching literacy, the program recognizes the links between reading, hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. By addressing these interconnected issues, the Liga hopes to promote holistic development for children and communities.
The Liga remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthen grassroots mobilization and harness the barangay’s role as the cornerstone of nation-building. In partnership with organizations like GK, the Liga is exploring ways to bring the country closer to the shared goal of “Zero Illiteracy sa ating bansa, one barangay at a time.”
